Many pool construction projects require the services of a licensed contractor

Pool Construction

Depending upon what type of pool you plan to install in your yard, you will likely require the services of a licensed contractor. While some above-ground pools can be purchased at retail stores and quickly installed at your home, most pools require more planning and assistance.

Above Ground Pools

An above ground pool is a budget-friendly option that appeals to many homeowners. The cost can range from as little as $500 for a small, temporary pool to more than $2,500 for a larger, more substantial pool.

Small above ground pools are a quick, easy option for homeowners who want a pool for just one season of use. These are set up quickly and easily and can function as inexpensive summer entertainment for younger children. These pools cost very little to operate and can be quickly removed. They are not, however, durable enough for heavy use and can be difficult to keep clean as most small pools come with an inadequate pool filter system.

Larger above ground pools can be a more permanent solution, complete with concrete pads or decks for entertaining. These can be installed by handy homeowners or by a professional installer. Unlike the smaller pools, it is important to prepare the site for a larger above ground pool. First of all, make certain your pool will be installed according to local regulations and codes. When you have chosen a firm, solid location for your pool, all sod and undergrowth should be removed to prevent rotting. The ground should be completely leveled and cleared of all rocks, roots or other sharp objects. Take note that even if your yard looks level, it most likely is not. Adding soil will not provide the needed support, instead you must remove soil from raised areas.

An inground pool can offer decades of swimming enjoyment.

Inground Pools

When planning an inground pool, you should first seek out an experienced and licensed contractor who will not only answer your questions, but suggest what type of pool is best for your lifestyle and property.

Typically, homeowners will choose from three types of inground pools: concrete, vinyl-lined and fiberglass.

Concrete pools are the most popular choice and can be formed in many custom shapes and sizes. This type of pool will have steel-reinforced walls covered with concrete. The concrete is then given a smooth finish or covered with a pebbled, textured material. Although this type of pool can take several weeks to complete, it is a strong, durable structure that can last more than 50 years.

A vinyl pool is made from a strong, flexible liner that fits into a reinforced hole. These are less labor intensive than concrete pools and are available in a variety of shapes and colors. A vinyl liner is usually replaced every 10 years and repairs require at least partial drainage of the pool.

A fiberglass pool is molded into the finished pool shape in a factory, shipped to the home and set into the excavation by crane. This type of pool is limited in choice of shapes or sizes, but it can be installed very quickly. In many cases, homeowners are swimming just a few days later. Because fiberglass does not alter the pH level of the water and is resistant to algae, cleaning and maintenance is less than in other types of pools.
